The music institute offers basic art education for children and juveniles according to the advanced syllabus in music. The education is legislated by the basic arts education act. In addition, Lauttasaari music school organizes diverse art-based activities for people of all ages. Lauttasaari music institute is a state funded private institute run by a support association. The music school was founded in 1972, and with its many concerts and events it brings joy and experiences to the islanders. Teaching language in Lauttasaari music institute is Finnish. In some cases in personal instrumental studies teaching can be organized in English or Swedish if possible.

Before instrumental studies

​

The basic art education in music starts from early childhood music education (musiikkileikkikoulu), which is aimed for children under the age of 7. Early childhood music education supports child’s holistic development. Main goal is to offer musical experiences that lay a solid foundation for further music studies and a life long positive relationship with music. The teaching is divided in different age groups.

Before the instrumental studies in basic education it is possible to take part in preparing studies (valmennus) for learning to play an instrument. After one study year in preparing studies it is possible to apply for instrumental studies through entrance exams.

Enrolling for the entrance exams (oppilasvalinnat) starts in April and the entrance exams are held in May. The aim for the exam is to test child’s musical abilities by singing and clapping rhythms. A short interview with child and parents is also included.

Instrumental studies

​

The task of the advanced syllabus for music in basic education in the arts is to create the preconditions for a good relationship with music. The advanced syllabus is divided in core studies (perusopinnot) and specialized studies (syventävät opinnot).

 

The purpose of the core studies is to inspire interest in goal-oriented musical studies and perseverance in the development of musical skills in pupils. Pupil’s strengths and interests are the starting point of the studies. The key content is diverse familiarisation with the basic musical technique, repertoire and expressive possibilites of the instrument chosen by the pupil.

Study modules in the core studies are:

• Instrumental studies (instrumental skills and skills in joint music making)

• Basic studies: Mupe1 and Mupe2 (structural and aural awareness)

• Alternative studies in groups (creative production)

 

In the core studies, teacher and pupil together define the goals for the study year. The purpose of the assessment of learning is to support the progress of pupils’ music studies. The versatile continuous assessment includes different ways of giving feedback and guidance.

In the specialized studies, pupils expand or focus their studies according to their own interests. During the studies, pupils plan and prepare the final assignment of the specialised syllabus to demonstrate their musical competence. The assignment may consist of different entities or focus on one specific type of in-depth competence. Pupils set the objectives for the final assignment and decide its method of implementation in cooperation with their teachers.

Study modules in the specialized studies are:

•  Instrumental studies

•  Alternative studies and other studies connected to the final assignment

 

Alternative study modules are designed to support the implementation of the final assignments. The study modules are defined according to specialization chosen by the pupil. The specializations are: instrument, creative production or project.

 

In the beginning of the specialized studies, teacher and pupil together define a personal study plan. Yearly assesment supports the deepening of pupil’s skills according to the emphasis of the studies and the final assignment.

Workshops and groups

​

Apart from the goal-oriented studies in the advanced syllabus there are also other ways to study music in groups:

​

Music workshops (Soittopajat) are activity groups aimed for children between 7–10 years. In the music workshops children get an indroduction to the basic elements in music through movement, singing and playing diverse instruments such as xylophone, ukulele, djembe and other percussion instruments.

 

Music technology and electronic music workshops are aimed for children between 9–12 years. In these workshops the world of music is explored through the ways of technology by carrying out small coding and building projects.

 

In Instrument groups the focus is in getting to know to play an instrument. The teaching is organized in groups. In instrument groups it is possible to study for example guitar, recorder, trombone, french horn and violin.

Music education for adults is organized in the instruments in which the teachers have free space in their schedules. Students are taken in in order of registration for one term at a time. The lengths and amounts of personal lessons can be fixed according to the student’s own interests.
